Piers Morgan Slammed On Twitter For Targeting Simone Biles And Her Decision To Withdraw From The Olympics
Piers Morgan is doing what he does best, and that’s riling everyone up with his opinions. But this time around there are some critics out there who believe that he might have gone just a little too far. T
hat’s because he slammed Simone Biles’ decision to drop out of the gymnastics team finals in a scathing column on Wednesday. There are some people out there who believe that his words might have been a bit too insensitive to her mental health. Here’s what you need to know.
“I don’t think it’s remotely courageous, heroic or inspiring to quit,” Piers wrote in the column, published in the Daily Mail. “When you call yourself the GOAT in sport, you can’t then quit the moment things get tough or you make a mistake. Something that I’m sure Simone Biles, in her heart, must realize because she’s a great champion and great champions just don’t do that.”
Simone Biles, meanwhile, says that while she’s in good physical shape, she felt like she had to pull back for her own mental health.
She said, “Emotionally, that kind of varies on the time and moment. Coming to the Olympics and being head star isn’t an easy feat. I feel like I’m also not having as much fun. This Olympic Games, I wanted it to be for myself, but I came in and I felt like I was still doing it for other people. It hurts my heart that doing what I love has been kind of taken away from me to please other people.”
However, Piers went on to say that the Olympics wasn’t about having fun, but about performing as an athlete in front of the world’s stage.
He wrote, “You are part of Team USA, representing the United States of America, and hundreds of millions of American people watching back home, not to mention all the sponsors who’ve paid huge sums to support you. And when you quit, you were performing as part of a gymnastics team, not yourself.”
Of course, there were a lot of people who had plenty to say about the matter. Many of them took to Twitter to write, “hey Piers, you couldn’t even begin to conceive of what it could possibly feel like to be an athlete at that level with that amount of pressure. sit down. you’re impulse to stir the pot is not only routine but terribly unbecoming and boring.”
Along with, “Oh, look you’re writing another column attacking another black woman. What else is new? To me, this is just another example of what a small shell of a man you are. It’s really sad and pathetic that you feel this is the only way to stay relevant. Grow up, get help & do better.”
